Kate + Zach – Queer Maternity Session in New Haven, CT

A year ago, I had the honor of shooting Kate and Zach’s wedding on the campus of Yale University. Since then, Kate and Zach have made the decision to start a family, and I couldn’t be more thrilled for them! Last Friday, while on a trip to New York visiting family, I returned to New Haven, CT to photograph their maternity session – or as I like to call it, their bump session! This was the first time I had gotten to see them since June, and Kate is positively glowing. Kate and Zach are the ultimate academics, so it was only appropriate that when we started in their home, we incorporate some of their favorite books – both for them and for the baby. It wasn’t too long before their dog, Zola, had to nudge her way into some shots and become a total ham! Then we headed outside, where I spotted a beautiful yellow building down the street and we had some fun with a pumpkin – only appropriate for this time of year! We also made our way to a couple local parks (where we found a Buckeye tree!), including East Rock Park, overlooking the city. Kate and Zach are a beautiful couple, building a family together, and I have been so privileged to document their journey.

I aim to capture moments and expressions that tell the story of a day, and are authentic to the people involved. If you can look at a collection of images I’ve taken of a total stranger and get a feeling for who they are and what they felt, then I’ve done my job!
