Jill + Erica: Columbus Ohio Lesbian Maternity Photography

This session is a particularly special to me. I’ve known Jill for over 9 years now; we met during undergrad at Ohio State when Jill first moved to Columbus from her homestate of Arizona. In fact, I knew Jill and Erica *before* they met eachother and started dating! Since then, we’ve been close friends and we’ve been together through many milestones: eachother’s weddings (I was in their wedding and Jill was in mine); my move back to Ohio after spending 3 1/2 years in Indiana; when each of us purchased and moved into our first homes; and now, Jill and Erica are expecting their first child, a boy, in January. It’s been an journey for Jill and Erica to get to this point, and it hasn’t been an easy one; as soon as Jill announced to me that she was pregnant, I don’t think either of us had to ask the other if a maternity session would happen, we immediately started planning!

For our session, we visited the wonderful So-Hud tree mural, the Buggy Works complex in the Arena District, North Bank Park and even climbed onto the train tracks (Erica was terrified), and ended at the Book Loft in the German Village. We knew from the start that the tree mural and Book Loft would be a part of the session as they reflected Jill and Erica as a couple; I added in Buggy Works because of the words on the buildings that I feel complimented this chapter in their lives perfectly, and I also wanted to visit North Bank Park just down the street because I wanted something to *scream* Columbus behind them. I wanted to say, yes, this what Columbus looks like!

Jill’s family, back in Arizona, has been far in distance from her, and in particular, her grandmother had just passed a few weeks prior to the session. To keep them close, Jill wore her mother’s bracelets and her late grandmother’s earrings. I was close with her grandmother as well, and her presence was felt.

I’ve always said maternity session are my second favorite to shoot behind weddings, and when I shoot another one I am reminded why. It’s another amazing moment in two peoples’ lives that I am so privileged to have documented. Jill and Erica recently celebrated their 8 year dating anniversary, and they have so much to look forward to.

I aim to capture moments and expressions that tell the story of a day, and are authentic to the people involved. If you can look at a collection of images I’ve taken of a total stranger and get a feeling for who they are and what they felt, then I’ve done my job!
